Gippsland Basin Joint Venture. Energy for Australia.

In 2019, the Gippsland Basin Joint Venture (GBJV) is celebrating 50 years of operations in Gippsland – a significant milestone both locally in Gippsland and more broadly for the impact the GBJV has had in Australia’s economic growth over the past half-century.

The GBJV, in which Esso Australia and BHP each have a 50 percent interest, is one of the most enduring partnerships in Australia’s corporate history. The GBJV operates 23 offshore platforms and installations in the Bass Strait and 600km of subsea pipelines, as well as onshore operations at Longford Plants and Long Island Point Plant.
In 1969, first gas produced from the Barracouta platform in Bass Strait made its way for processing at Longford Plants. Since then, the GBJV operations have supported production of some four billion barrels of oil and eight trillion cubic feet of gas.

For the past 50 years oil and gas from Bass Strait has provided a great deal of the energy that allows Australians to go about their day – fuelling their cars, powering industry, heating homes and supplying the chemical feedstocks used to make everyday products such as food wraps, plastics, inks, shampoo bottles, medicines and colouring pencils.

Over the past half-century, our Gippsland operations have transitioned from a predominantly oil business to today’s focus on providing natural gas to Australia.

Today, the GBJV now supplies between 40 and 50 percent of east coast Australian domestic gas demand. Through our projects, including recent exploration activities in the Gippsland Basin, the West Barracouta gas development project and the $5.5 billion Kipper Tuna Turrum project, we are maintaining our commitment to invest in gas projects to continue to meet Australia’s energy needs.

We employ a long-term approach to supplying the Australian domestic gas market, investing in the Gippsland community to bring jobs, economic growth and opportunity.
