Altona Refinery. Fuelling Victoria.

In 2019, our Altona Refinery is celebrating 70 years of operations – 70 years of fuelling Victoria.

Since 1949, Altona Refinery has played an important role in Australia’s overall fuel supply chain. Altona Refinery represented an enormous investment in Australian industry during the post-World War II period even by the standards of the day, both in scope and in monetary terms. Initial construction cost £1,000,000, and the major expansion of the 1950s meant Altona Refinery was then the most modern of its kind in the world.

The refinery now produces a number of refined petroleum products, including unleaded petrol, diesel and jet fuel, to supply around half of Victoria’s petroleum fuel needs currently.

Today, Altona Refinery is one of Victoria’s major manufacturing facilities, producing more than 14 million litres of refined fuel products per day - enough to fill around 330,000 cars. Over the past five years, we have invested more than $400 million on improving the safety reliability and viability of our refining and distribution facilities in Melbourne’s west. Investment in technology saw us increase the refining capacity of Altona Refinery in recent years from 80,000 to 90,000 barrels of refined fuel products per day.

We employ a long-term approach to supplying the Australian fuel market, investing in the community of Melbourne’s west to bring jobs, economic growth and opportunity.
